The slates have long since disappeared from the schools and the more expensive tablets and pencils have taken their place. Hardly ever is a slate seen in a store, and it may be said that the makers of slates for schools are out of a job or engaged in other pursuits. Many of the younger generation never saw a slate.

Twelve miles north of Bandera, nestling snugly on the banks of Camp Verde Creek, is all that remains of an experiment tried out by the United States government-that of using camels to transport dispatches and supplies across the then wild frontier.

How long does it take you to drive to San Antonio? If the endless construction on I-H 10 does not delay your trip, it’s possible to make it to San Antonio in less than a half-hour. Next time you’re stalled in traffic, don’t complain, just remember what the earlier residents of the Hill Country had to endure while they traveled throughout the area.

Located on Delightful Hill, one block north of the country court house, in the pretty little town of Bandera, Texs, Frontier Times Museum is a mecca for all visitors---hundreds of them---during all seasons of the year. Bandera is just forty-eight miles northwest of San Antonio to Bandera---a steady climb up into blue hills all the way--really a drive you will enjoy if you love beautiful mountain scenery and mild climatic conditions.

Since Frontier Times Museum opened the doors of its new home on May 20, 1933, more than 25,000 people have come to visit it. These visitors are chiefly from other towns, cities and states, and some were from foreign countries. Naturally, some of them were local people, but the percentage is necessarily small, for Bandera has a population of less than 1,000, while Bandera County contains only about 5,000 people altogether.
